A sci-fi story hiding inside an MMO
CrossCode takes place in CrossWorlds, a fictional online game, and it plays the premise for everything it is worth. Other players chat about boss tactics and badly designed quests, the writing jokes about the game's own quirks, and beneath the MMO banter a real sci-fi mystery builds up: who Lea is, and why she can only say a few words. The story starts as a love letter to online games and grows into something much heavier. Characters like Sergey and Emilie feel like people, and the emotional scenes land hard even when Lea mostly repeats one word. If you play for plot, this one carries you a long way.
Combat that rewards aiming, dodging and swapping
Battles are quick and physical: you dash, guard, shoot charged ranged shots and close in for melee, all in tight 2D arenas. Enemies telegraph their weaknesses, and the trick is using the tools and elements you find to break them open before going in for damage. On top of that sits proper RPG depth: over 90 combat arts, passive skills and a big tree of equipment to pick from. There is no grinding, since experience adjusts to your level, so a fight is won by reading the enemy, not by outleveling it. With 120 enemy types and more than 30 boss fights, the variety holds up.
Can you adjust the difficulty?
Can you adjust the difficulty?
Yes. The game includes accessibility options that let you lower damage taken and cap your HP, so combat pressure can be turned down without locking content. Puzzle timing can be slowed as well, which helps when a room demands very fast execution. The puzzles themselves stay as demanding as designed, so these settings ease the fighting more than the thinking. If the combat ever gets in the way of the story and the puzzles, the sliders are there.
How long is the game?
The main adventure runs roughly 30 to 80 hours depending on how much you chase. There are 7 large areas, 7 themed dungeons, over 100 quests and secrets scattered everywhere. Hidden chests alone can eat dozens of hours, and the game rewards you with character lines when you reach a particularly nasty one.
How hard are the puzzles really?
Demanding enough that they define the game. The dungeons are long chains of puzzle rooms that combine the mechanics you have learned, and later ones add timing on top of logic. The upside is that the solutions are intuitive and need no outside knowledge, only patience and quick hands. If long puzzle stretches sound like a chore rather than the point, this is the one part to weigh carefully.
