Is Alien Swarm worth it?
Alien Swarm is worth it if…
- you like class-based squads where everyone has a job
- you enjoy tense, fast rounds that fit into a short evening
- you and your friends want something new to fail at together
- you don't mind a short campaign as long as the runs stay tense

A bug hunt built on teamwork
Four players form a squad of IAF marines, each from a different class: Officer, Medic, Tech and Special Weapons. The classes matter, and on higher difficulties they matter a lot: the tech hacks consoles while the other three cover him, the medic keeps people standing, everyone watches a different direction. You push through an overrun colony, from the icy surface down into a lava-flooded mining facility, completing objectives while swarms close in from every side. It is tactical in a way the top-down view hides at first: positioning, ammo and who covers whom decide whether you reach the extraction point or become part of the infestation.
Loadouts, tools and locked doors
Over 40 weapons and equipment pieces unlock as you level up, and the loadout combinations are where the tactics live. The tesla gun freezes a swarm in its tracks, turrets hold a corridor while you focus elsewhere, and the welding tool seals a door in the face of whatever is chasing you. You drop a heal beacon behind the line, weld the door shut, and take a breath before the next breach. Not every weapon is a winner, and some overlap, but choosing the right tool for the mission, and for your squad, is half the game. Persistent items and ranks give you something to chase between runs.
One lobby, one squad, one more run
Sessions are short and intense, so a mission fits between other plans, and losing one just means the squad argues about loadouts and queues up again. It runs on modest hardware, so getting three friends into the lobby is rarely the hard part. The tension does the social work for you: a motion tracker pinging, bugs pouring in from the left, someone yelling to weld the door. When everyone plays their role and the squad extracts by a pixel, it is the kind of win you bring up again next weekend.
