A party that lives or dies together
You pick four adventurers, and their strengths and flaws decide how far down you get. Synergy is everything: a team that covers each other turns battles into a plan you get to watch work, while a badly matched one seals its own grave. In combat you control space, spend stamina and mana wisely, and think a turn ahead, because the bold are rewarded and the careless are punished. The fights are turn-based and grid-based, so every step matters as much as every spell. When a battle goes well, it is because you made it go well.
A world built by hand, room by room
Every corridor in Underkeep is handmade, and every room hides intent. You will find strange rituals, lingering spirits, abandoned camps and cryptic symbols, plus choices that echo deeper than you expect. Some of the best moments come from the small stuff: you tap a wall that looks slightly off, it opens, and an optional boss stares back. Puzzles fit the world instead of yanking you out of it, and hidden alcoves reward the kind of player who checks corners. Talk to the peculiar locals too. They know things.
What else should you know?
Is it old-fashioned to play?
In spirit, yes. In practice, no. The grid movement and turn-based pacing are deliberately old school, but the controls are smooth and responsive, the visuals are clear, and small conveniences remove the classic frustrations without losing the tension. It plays like the crawlers you remember, only without the parts you do not miss.
Do you have to keep your own notes?
No. A built-in automap tracks mysteries, locked doors and every spot you swear you will return to later, and you can drop custom markers on it. The game keeps the puzzle-solving and the exploring; the graph paper stays in the 90s where it belongs.
Can you customize your party?
Yes. Character customization and class-based roles are core to the game: you assemble your four adventurers yourself, and how their classes and traits fit together shapes your whole run. Inventory management matters too, so what you carry is part of the strategy.
Does it matter how you play the story?
Yes. Choices matter here. The world is fully handcrafted, and the game warns that your choices can echo deeper than you expect, so the careful route and the bold route will not read the same. Treat every descent as a decision.
