A crew that keeps the boat alive
You control the crew in order to control the boat. Every sailor has a role, a schedule and a state of mind: assign shifts, rotate officers, watch fatigue and morale. Hungry, exhausted sailors with low spirit lose even a skirmish, so the small things count. When morale drops, you can deal a round of Skat or put music on the radio. In an emergency, order everyone into their bunks to stretch the oxygen. You can walk the boat in first person and do an officer's job yourself, or give orders and let them work. The crew are people you get to know, and losing one stings.
Survival when everything goes wrong
The damage system is the heart of the survival side. Sometimes the situation is unprecedented and tests your calm more than your knowledge. You can try to save the whole crew, or leave someone behind to save the rest. Out on open sea you are often on your own: spend supplies carefully, ask allies for help, or loot enemy wreckages.
A Kriegsmarine career that grows with you
Headquarters assigns you patrols, and the orders are never linear: new instructions arrive mid-mission and unexpected problems appear out of nowhere. Brave completion earns budget for your unit and grows your reputation as a skipper. You will need both, because the enemy's technology keeps advancing. Spend funds on upgrading your boat and buying equipment: new torpedo types, sonar decoys, CO2 absorbers and more. Reputation unlocks additional permissions, and sending officers on special tasks at headquarters can speed up research. A career can stretch from 1939 to the end of the war, and no two playthroughs play out the same.
