Is Phoenix Point worth it?
Phoenix Point is worth it if…
- you like turn-based tactics where you aim every shot yourself instead of rolling dice
- you want a global strategy layer with bases, resources and diplomacy on top of the battles
- you enjoy campaigns that play out differently each time, with multiple endings to uncover
- you have patience for juggling squads, ships and ammo, and do not mind some micromanagement

Aiming that puts the shot in your hands
There is no hit-percentage roulette here. When a soldier fires, you line up the shot yourself, round by round, along a simulated bullet trajectory. A point-blank shotgun blast does not mysteriously miss. What you aim at is up to you: go for center mass, or pick off the part that matters. A mutant sprinting at your squad can lose its organic grenade launcher before it fires once, or its legs before it closes the distance. Enemies do the same to your soldiers, so where you stand and what you expose matters. This aiming system is the highlight for many long-time players, and it changes the whole feel of a firefight: less dice, more marksmanship.
An enemy that learns what works for you
The Pandoravirus does not sit still. Its creatures mutate as the campaign goes on, growing new abilities and nastier forms, and they adapt to the tactics that have been serving you well. The squad that cruised through the first month will meet something built to punish exactly that approach. The upside is that your side grows too: research unlocks new technologies, soldiers level up with meaningful upgrade choices, and gear can be mixed freely across classes. It becomes an arms race where power never means safety, and every new mutation sends you back to the drawing board for your loadouts.
Three factions, one ruined planet, your call
You are not humanity's only hope, just its best organized one. You can work with them through diplomacy and earn their unique rewards, steal what you need through subterfuge, or simply crush them with military force. The story itself has multiple endings that only reveal the full picture across several playthroughs.
What should you know before starting?
Can you lose soldiers permanently?
Yes. Death is permanent, which is where much of the tension comes from. A soldier you have leveled up and equipped for dozens of hours can be gone in one bad turn, especially since enemies can target body parts just like you can. Careful positioning is not optional.
Does it hold up today?
It received over two years of updates shaped by community feedback, and later updates worked with the community's most popular overhaul mod to improve balance and quality of life across the game. It still has rough edges, but the core of aiming your own shots against mutating enemies is intact and worth your time.
