Battles on a grid, decided by positioning
Every fight plays out on a classic turn-based battlefield. You station each soldier to make the most of their class and magic skills, and the game rewards careful placement over lucky rolls: attacks in range always connect, with only criticals and guards left to chance. If a plan falls apart, an undo function lets you rewind a turn and try again, which keeps a bad read from costing you a favourite character. Bosses shield themselves behind their minions until you clear them out, and hulking monsters occupy whole stretches of the grid, forcing you to rethink your formation mid-fight. Some battles get genuinely hard, and a few spikes may send you to the easier story mode. That is part of the deal.
A rebellion is more than battles
Between missions you run a camp: a place to build up, talk to your allies and recruit newcomers, some of them former enemies from the map you just fought. Fast travel lets you click a character on the map and walk straight to them for a conversation. Bonds grow through gifts and camp activities, and some recruits only join once you have spent the time to reach them. With over 20 playable characters across 10 classes, you equip, train and reclass your squad, unlocking new skills, spells and passive abilities as they master their trades. You cannot befriend everyone, so choosing who matters to you is part of the game.
What happens after you win?
Can you replay the war once you finish it?
Yes. A New Game+ mode lets you carry over your choice of stats and items and win the war all over again. You can recruit different allies, try strategies you skipped the first time and experiment with other difficulty levels, so a second run does not have to play like the first.
How long is the campaign?
It is a long one. The story runs across 27 chapters, each with a main battle, camp time with your companions and an optional fight, and a first playthrough tends to land somewhere between 40 and 70 hours. The story itself is linear: the battles and scenarios change, the plot follows one road.
Is the combat luck-based?
Far less than most tactics games. If you attack an enemy in range, the hit always lands; the only randomness comes from critical hits and guards, which reduce damage instead of making you miss. Positioning and planning decide battles, not dice.
How does magic work?
The three schools do different jobs. Light magic is about healing and defensive buffs, dark magic handles crowd control and weakening enemies, and elemental magic sets up environmental combos. Picking which characters train in which school shapes your whole squad.
