Is Counter-Strike: Condition Zero worth it?

Counter-Strike: Condition Zero is worth it if…

  • you want to learn Counter-Strike's maps and guns without a live team depending on you
  • you like picking and commanding a squad, not just shooting alongside one
  • you want the classic tactical shooter that runs on nearly any computer
  • you enjoy mission challenges that force you out of your favourite weapon

Tour of Duty: Counter-Strike with a squad of your own

The Tour of Duty campaign is regular Counter-Strike rounds against bots, with a twist: you build the team. Before each mission you pick squadmates, each with their own stats and preferred weapons, so a long-range map calls for a sniper and a hostage rescue for the ones who like to rush. You grow from three members to a full squad, and you can order them to hold a position or follow you.

Every mission adds challenges on top of winning: kill a set number of enemies with a specific weapon, win a round in under ninety seconds, rescue a certain amount of hostages. It pushes you off your trusted rifle and teaches you guns you would never buy online. The bots are competent company, and losing a round costs you nothing but pride. It is the closest Counter-Strike has come to a singleplayer game.

What is Deleted Scenes?

What is Deleted Scenes?

A second game bundled with Condition Zero: over a dozen singleplayer missions played as counter-terrorist units around the world. Each mission stands on its own, and they range further than the multiplayer maps ever do: a nuclear missile facility, a South American jungle, a bank heist, a stealth job where a fiber optic camera matters more than your aim. There are new toys too, like an M60 and radio-detonated bombs. The stories are self-contained rather than one connected plot, so take each mission as its own small operation.

Can you play it solo?

Yes, and that is the point of it. The Tour of Duty campaign and the skirmish modes are built around bots, and Deleted Scenes is singleplayer from the ground up. The multiplayer is still there, but you do not need a lobby or a team of strangers to get the full game: the campaign, the challenges and the bonus missions all work alone.

Is it good for learning Counter-Strike?

It is a gentle way in. Bots give you a relaxed environment to learn the maps, the buy menu and the mission types, and the campaign has difficulty settings you can climb. The per-mission challenges help too: being told to win a round with a sniper rifle or a submachine gun gets you comfortable with weapons you would otherwise never touch. Once the bots feel easy, the multiplayer is waiting.

How does it differ from the original Counter-Strike?

The core game is familiar, with remade versions of classic maps, higher-resolution textures and updated models for the teams and hostages. On top of that come the bots, the Tour of Duty campaign with its squad selection and challenges, skirmish modes, and the Deleted Scenes missions. The gunplay and round structure are the ones you know; the singleplayer content is what is new.
