Blackguards is worth it if…
- you like turn-based tactics where positioning and the environment decide fights
- you want a dark fantasy story about criminals and antiheroes, not noble heroes
- you enjoy character customization with real depth, spells and abilities to spend points on

Battles where the map is a weapon
Every fight plays out on a hex grid, and over 180 unique battlemaps mean the ground keeps changing under you. The terrain is not decoration: you can knock bee hives onto enemies, shove barrels around, or carry a torch into flammable swamp gas and blow up everything nearby, possibly including yourself. With 40 special abilities and more than 90 spells, you build each fight your own way: aggressive, defensive, or plain sneaky. Positioning matters, and so does reading the map before your first move. Fair warning: battles can run long, especially when ten enemies take their turns one by one. If you like slow, deliberate tactics, that patience pays off.
A story told from the wrong side of the law
The world is threatened, and its hope does not land on shining knights. It lands on a band of misfits and criminals, in a dark fantasy tale of crime, drugs and murder. You play a warrior, mage or hunter, customize your skills as you see fit, and lead up to five characters through a campaign of doubt, treason and loss. At key turning points, your choices steer the story and decide its outcome. Every line of dialogue is voiced, and the hand-drawn backdrops give the whole thing a painted, storybook look, even when your party is getting flattened. The tone stays grim throughout: this is not a cheerful rescue mission.
