A mystery that pulls you under
A fire takes everything, and the truth about it sits buried under Kaifeng's glittering surface. You dig: the Ghost Fanlou, the city's most famous restaurant, and the people who profit from what everyone agrees not to see.
The catch is that you are already part of the plot. Every step closer to the truth tangles you deeper in it, and the story keeps twisting what you thought you knew. Several endings are bleak, and the bad ones are written with real care: some players single out the bad endings as the best writing in the game.
Romance with the family you married into
Forced into the Hailian household, you find yourself drawn to the brothers-in-law instead of the husband waiting for you. Three characters are romanceable at launch: Hao Lianzhong, the straightforward twin who thinks you are the only one in the family who understands him; Shen Siduo, the courteous official with a past he does not talk about; and a hidden figure who rules the underworld and belongs to no one.
The routes do not share content: each is its own story with its own tone, from sweet and funny to genuinely disturbing, and the endings within a route differ sharply. One honest note: the routes are not equally strong, and some players find one far more gripping than the others.
Reading with room to roam
This is a visual novel that lets you leave the page. Between story beats you wander a free-roaming map of Kaifeng, where random encounters and neighbours' lives play out across the four seasons. You collect conversation topics to bring up with your love interests, over 35 of them, some too private for anyone else. You invite them to walk the dog, browse the bookshops, watch one of four seasonal plays and argue about it afterwards, or sit down to nearly 60 seasonal dishes, with over 20,000 words of food talk waiting.
It is a lot. Collecting everything is a grind, and some players recommend a guide. But the tavern gossip, the book club, the street strolls: they make the city feel lived in, and the people in it worth knowing.
What should you know before playing?
Can you play as yourself, or rename the heroine?
You can change her first name, but not her surname, and she comes with a lot of established personality: sharp-tongued, clear-eyed, secretly sarcastic. The game is built around her as a character, not as an empty vessel, so it suits readers who enjoy a heroine with her own mind more than players who want to project themselves onto her.
Do your choices actually matter?
Yes. The routes branch early and rarely offer fake choices, and the 29 endings differ from each other dramatically. One practical tip from players: save often and before branch points, because some paths lock in early and backtracking without a save means replaying a lot of text.
Is it fully voiced?
The main story is fully voiced by more than thirty voice actors, with regional Chinese dialects used to give characters distinct voices and roots. Side content is only partly voiced. There are also two theme songs and 38 music tracks, including a personal theme for each major character.
