Diplomacy with teeth
Wars are only one tool. Declare them, negotiate peace, guarantee an ally's independence, demand concessions or force a rival into vassalage. Trade resources to grow rich, slap sanctions on opponents to squeeze them, and call allies in when a fight turns against you. And when diplomacy gets personal, the game lets you send an insult. It is a small thing, but it changes how a negotiation table feels.
One concrete moment: you guarantee a small neighbour's independence, a larger power declares war on it anyway, and now you decide whether the promise was worth a continental war. That kind of choice is the heart of the game.
Armies, fleets and the long game
Raise armies, build fleets and fortify provinces, then command forces from infantry up to cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers. The tech tree runs all the way to nuclear bombs, and chemical weapons are on the table too, so escalation is always your call: build defensive infrastructure and hold your borders, or commit everything to breaking someone else's.
Behind the front sits an economy. Manage provinces one by one, unlock buildings and structures, and decide each turn whether resources go into development or into the war. Six political regimes and branching decisions mean two campaigns rarely play out the same way.
Bring friends, redraw the map together
Multiplayer turns the whole thing into a shared power struggle: join a lobby, pick countries, and argue over borders with people you know. It works as a face-off between rivals or as a loose team effort against the rest of the map, and because turns are quick and the rules are easy to pick up, a session stays social instead of turning into a spreadsheet meeting.
It is also a good game to play alongside someone in separate sessions. Compare how your campaigns diverge, trade tips, and dare each other into worse starting positions.
