Valheim is worth it if…

- you like raising a longhouse, defending it, and making it comfortable
- you want to play alone or share the work with friends

A corrupted Norse afterlife
You wake in the Tenth World, an afterlife inspired by Norse mythology and corrupted by hostile forces. The world is procedurally generated.
It is a beautiful place to look at. The atmosphere carries the setting too. You learn the shape of your world by walking it.
Sailing to unknown shores
You sail the open seas to find unknown lands.
New ground means new surroundings to learn, new finds to gather, and new threats to watch for. Exploring the world is enjoyable, and sailing the seas is enjoyable. Travel takes a long time, though.
Longhouses worth coming back to
You decide the scale of home, from a single small shelter to a full village or a fortress set into the hills. Defence and structural integrity matter.
Bases can be decorated for comfort, and building them is satisfying in itself as rooms fill out. Fresh finds open up further ways to make gear, shape shelter, and prepare meals, so each haul home brings new options.
Axes, bows, and the Forsaken
Combat uses axes, blades, and bows, and dodging and parrying give fights their timing and depth.
Regional bosses called the Forsaken must be defeated to advance, and each boss unlocks the next biome. Some bosses are very hard to beat, so expect to prepare, eat well, and upgrade gear.
Good to know before you land?
Can I play Valheim alone or with friends?
Both work. Playing solo is possible, though some tasks are very hard to do alone.
How does progress work across biomes?
Each biome holds its own resources and enemies, and defeating a Forsaken boss opens the way forward. Fresh finds then open up further ways to make gear, shape shelter, and prepare meals, so progress is tied to beating bosses and putting what you find to use.
What is the food system for?
What you eat shapes the perks you get, tied to health and stamina that can turn fights. Cooking better meals from new materials is a practical way to take on harder enemies.
How punishing is dying?
Dying is punishing, so a death far from home can cost time and progress. Ore cannot be taken through portals. Pack carefully and keep a route home in mind.
