Descend through a town's underbelly
Torchlight is a boom town built on Ember, a magic ore that enchants or corrupts whatever it touches. The tunnels below are crawling with twisted creatures, so a hero arriving to work the mines gets pulled straight into saving the world instead.
The whole game is one long descent: 35 floors of randomized caves, mines and ruins, with a new region roughly every four floors and a boss at the end of each. You drop a fire spell into a packed corridor, watch the loot scatter, and send your pet trotting off to town with the overflow while you keep swinging. The town above stays friendly and toy-bright, a cheerful contrast to what waits below.
Three heroes, one pet, endless loot
You pick from three classes: a warrior who wades in, a rogue who shoots from range, and a mage who fills the screen with lightning and fire. Each has skill trees to branch into, and the systems stay simple: four attributes, a handful of weapon types, no build that can be ruined beyond repair.
Then there's the pet. A cat or dog fights beside you, hauls your gear, and can run to town and sell your junk without you ever leaving the dungeon. Fishing is the odd one out: pause the adventuring, catch something, and feed the right fish to your pet to transform it into a stronger ally. When a hero retires, they pass one prized item down to your next character.
Can you play it with friends?
Can you play it solo, or is it online only?
It's built as a single-player game that runs fully offline. The multiplayer tag aside, the core experience here is you, your pet and the caves. If you want company, mods from the included TorchED editor can change plenty of things, though the game itself is a solo descent.
How long does it take to finish?
The story is short by ARPG standards: 35 dungeon floors, and a leveled character can push through the plot quickly. The real length is in the endless dungeon after the story, grinding toward level 100, and chasing things like 50,000 kills or 1,000 fish caught. Expect many hours if you aim for full completion.
Is it hard to learn?
No, and that's the point. Three classes, three skill branches each, four attributes, and a clear linear path through the floors. There's no crafting web or stat allocation trap to worry about, so it works well as a first taste of the genre before the heavier ones.
Does it hold up today?
The cartoon look and animations have aged well, and the cozy dark-fantasy mood still lands. The honest trade-off: variety runs thin over long sessions, since enemies and loot repeat, and the late-game difficulty spikes hard. It shines brightest in the first stretch and in short, casual runs.
