A soldier, a savior, and a world with a deadline
A red star has appeared in the sky, and its arrival means the end of all life on Earth. Humanity's answer is an evacuation project, and the ones who can actually pull it off are the felixes: engineered humans with brilliant minds and long lives. Sion, the most gifted of them, has spent the past hundred years in a research facility on a solitary island, working so the rest of mankind can leave. Ryou Haruna, a soldier of the unified government, is sent to watch over her. She wants freedom from the military holding her. He has his orders. The story grows from that quiet standoff, and it stays small and personal: two people, an island, and a planet running out of time.
A visual novel that plays like a film
Most visual novels show you talking heads over a static background. eden* throws that convention out. The story is told almost entirely through full event illustrations at widescreen resolution, staged and paced closer to a movie than a book. Characters blink, their lips move as they speak, and scenes flow as one illustrated moment into the next. The hand-drawn art carries a lot of the feeling: sunsets over a doomed world, the strange calm of the island facility. The music does the rest, with a large, varied soundtrack of piano and strings that turns quiet scenes into the ones you remember. Japanese voice acting runs throughout, including the male lead, which is rarer than it should be.
A short, linear read you finish in an evening or two
If you want a visual novel that respects your time, this is one. eden* runs about eight to ten hours, in a single linear story with no route branching to manage and no fail states to worry about. You read at your own pace, and the story does the work: no mind games, no tangled plot twists, just a simple, clean tale about two people finding each other at the end of the world. That simplicity is the point, and it is also the trade-off: the ending is easy to see coming, and the plot offers little urgency or surprise along the way. Come for the feelings, the art and the characters rather than for twists, and it lands hard.
