Is Arma 3 worth it?
Arma 3 is worth it if…
- you want slow, tactical combat where planning and communication matter
- you like huge open worlds with tanks, helicopters, jets, and infantry side by side
- you enjoy making missions, running them as Zeus, or digging through mods
- you find funny physics and brutal deaths part of the charm

A war where waiting is the job
You lie still in the brush for twenty minutes, listening to the radio crackle, then one shot changes everything. Arma 3 treats combat as combined arms work across air, land, and sea: realistic ballistics, careful maneuvering, and teamwork that actually keeps you alive. You can go infantry, drive armor, fly helicopters and jets, operate autonomous vehicles, or command a squad. Death comes fast and often stupidly, which makes the missions you survive feel earned.
Campaigns, co-op, and curated chaos
The base game ships with the East Wind campaign on Altis and Stratis, the cooperative Apex Protocol in the jungles of Tanoa, and the alien-encounter story of First Contact. Add showcase missions, scenarios, challenges, and the virtual arsenal and garage for tinkering. Multiplayer runs from official Combat Patrol, Escape, and Warlords scenarios to community units that take teamwork seriously. In Zeus mode, a live Game Master drops enemies, objectives, and surprises onto other players in real time.
Over 610 km² of bad decisions
You cross sun-scorched Mediterranean islands, dense South Pacific jungle, and militarized woodland, with terrains totaling over 610 km². Altis, Stratis, Malden, Tanoa, and Livonia each push a different kind of fight: long desert sightlines, close jungle ambushes, cold forest patrols. DLC and Creator DLC add more theaters, from Vietnam jungles to Cold War Germany to desert Sahara. Bring a map, bring patience, and budget extra time for walking. Lots of walking.
Guns, vehicles, and other people's mods
You tune your loadout down to attachments, clothing, and equipment, choosing from over 80 weapons and more than 40 modeled vehicles. Then the Workshop takes over, with over 160,000 user-made weapons, vehicles, scenarios, and full game modes to download. The Eden editor lets you build intricate scenarios and share them. Want a tank invasion, a night op, a goat race on the runway, or Star Wars with artillery support 20 km away. Someone has probably already made it.
What should you know before deploying?
How hard is Arma 3 to learn?
Hard. Controls cover infantry, vehicles, aircraft, squad commands, and radios, with plenty of modifier keys, and helicopters and jets take real practice. Bootcamp, showcases, and guides are close to mandatory, and your first hours will include confusion and dying without seeing the shooter. Once the basics click, coordinated operations become deeply satisfying.
What do you actually do in multiplayer?
You join a squad, take a role, and work the objective together in modes like Combat Patrol, Escape, and Warlords, plus countless community-made modes from roleplay servers to full milsim units. Zeus scenarios add a human Game Master shaping the battle live. Lone-wolf rushing tends to end quickly; sticking with the team, sharing intel, and moving carefully goes much further.
How big is the game without mods?
Very big. You get three campaign experiences across Altis, Stratis, Tanoa, and Livonia, plus scenarios, showcases, challenges, the arsenal and garage, and official multiplayer scenarios. That is hundreds of hours before touching the Workshop. Mods then multiply it into new eras, maps, weapons, zombies, roleplay, and total conversions.
Does it run well and play fair?
It is an old, heavy engine with jank: AI alternates between brutally accurate and completely lost, smoke and foliage do not always block sight the way you expect, and performance can dip even on strong machines. Mod updates and server mod lists can also eat an evening. If you can laugh when a lawn chair launches your truck skyward, you will get along fine.
