Buildings that do the dirty work
Buy blueprints at the craftsman's house and raise up to three special buildings in each of your cities, dozens of designs to choose from, each with its own look and its own trick. An arrow tower punishes anyone who walks past. A toll station takes their money. And effects stack: a rival who wanders into a city armed with towers, a mass grave and a toll station gets wounded, loses soldiers and loses silver in one visit. There is even a statue that drains the population of every nearby enemy city, so a fortress can crumble without a single siege. The map itself is part of the strategy now, with elevation, ladders and hot air balloons opening routes to places you could never reach before. If your funds allow it, you can even build a road and charge everyone who uses it.
Duels, sieges and eighty ways to cheat honorably
War here is not one dice roll. You pick which generals fight, set siege and defense machines, split your troops, and then play tactics cards that can flip the whole battle. Force an opponent to pay a toll. Trade your junk weapon for their best one mid-duel. Reshape the battlefield terrain, or bring a fortress down in a moment. There are more than eighty of these tricks, and civil officers finally matter as much as the muscle. Generals get shout abilities too, so Zhang Fei can hold a bridge against an army all by himself. The duels are the showpiece: a special camera angle, smooth animation and flashy special moves that look closer to a fighting game than a board game.
Can you play it with friends?
Is it good for a quick session or a long campaign?
Both, in different ways. Each lord has thirteen story scenarios, and the campaign runs long, with rival factions like Dong Zhuo's army, spell-casting Yellow Turbans, Princess Longcui's women's corps and the Southern Barbarians. The minigames work the other way: a round of dice or a horse race takes minutes and is a fine way to earn early cash when your treasury is empty.
How does the dice casino actually work?
Everyone takes turns rolling, and the number decides your fate: seven adds 100 silver to the pot, eight takes 100 out, nine sweeps the whole stake, and ten gets you nothing at all. The horse races go further, with more than a dozen items like strength pills, bomb treasures and sudden windfalls that players lay on the horses before the race. You can back your own horse or sabotage everyone else's, and every bet can change the outcome.
