Land, air and sea in one battle
War Thunder is a large online military game about planes, tanks and ships, spanning early-20th-century machines through to modern units. Planes, helicopters, ground units and ships share the same realistic fights.
The vehicle you bring decides your job: gunners handle bombers and air defence, rocket units answer aircraft, and small quick boats strike at larger ships.
Thousands of vehicles across 100 maps
The roster runs past 3,000 machines, each one researched from old records and surviving examples. That range covers planes, helicopters, armour, ships and more, so there is always another machine to learn and compare.
There are 100 maps, covering the main historical battle theatres. Matches are often lopsided, so come for the size of the roster and the variety of battlefields more than for evenly matched fights.
PvP, campaigns and solo missions
For online play, you can set the challenge of full-scale combat missions to suit your experience and play style. Historical campaigns that change over time and missions for one player add structured options beside the online battles.
Unlocking new vehicles takes a long grind. Pick this up if you like working through a long grind.
Graphics, sound and music
The graphics are astonishing, with highly detailed vehicles, and that detail carries across the machines on display. Sound effects are authentic. Music is written to build atmosphere around the fighting.
Good to know?
What do you do in a battle?
You join large online battles across land, air and water. Depending on your vehicle, you might man a bomber turret, fire anti-aircraft guns, launch rockets at planes or fire a torpedo from a fast boat, all inside the same shared fight.
How many vehicles and maps are there?
The choice spans more than 3,000 machines researched from old records and surviving examples. You fight across 100 maps drawn from the main theatres of history.
Can I play alone?
Yes. Beside player-versus-player missions at several difficulty settings, the game includes historical campaigns that change over time and missions for one player, so you can play structured content without joining competitive matches every time.
