Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil One more run
A vertical bullet hell remake of the 2002 classic: pick the shrine maiden Reimu or the magician Marisa and weave through screens packed with bullets. Every track has been rearranged by ZUN, the graphics are crisp and high-res, and a new unlimited lives mode lets you learn the patterns without the pressure. Hard, fast, and short enough for one more run.

Dodge everything, all at once
The whole game is one question: how do you get through this? Bullets pour down the screen in curtains, and your job is to slip through the gaps. Hold focus mode and your movement slows to a crawl, letting you thread a path millimetres wide. You can see your hitbox now, so you know exactly how close that knife came.
You play as Reimu, a shrine maiden with wide attacks and easy evasion, or Marisa, a magician who answers everything with raw firepower. Each has multiple shot types: some shots home in on enemies on their own, others hit far harder if you stand in front of the danger and shoot. Bombs are limited and devastating, and choosing when to spend one is often the difference between a clear and a continue screen.
The scarlet mist incident
Gensokyou has been blanketed in a scarlet mist, and someone at the Western-style mansion that appeared in it is responsible. Reimu and Marisa set out to find out who. Along the way you fight your way up through stages, each ending in a boss with named spell card attacks, and the dialogue between them is sharp and funny in a way that gives the shooting a reason.
The mansion's residents await at the top, and the final stretch is where the difficulty truly bites. The spike after stage three is real: patterns get denser, faster, and meaner. But every attack can be learned, and there are multiple difficulty levels plus spell practice to drill a single attack until the path through it is muscle memory.
A remake with the original alongside
This is the 2002 classic rebuilt: upscaled high-resolution graphics, new bullet sprites that are easier to read, a visible hitbox, a boss position indicator, and quality-of-life touches like collecting all items from the top of the screen. The soundtrack has been fully rearranged by ZUN himself, and if the new versions are not to your taste, you can switch back to the originals in the settings.
There is also a new challenge mode with unlimited lives, a gentle way in for anyone intimidated by the genre. And if you want the real thing, the Classic version is included too, recreating the original 2002 gameplay as closely as possible. One note: all text in the Classic version is in Japanese.
How hard is it really?
How hard is it, honestly?
Hard. This is a bullet hell, and the difficulty climbs sharply after stage three. Expect to die a lot before a clear. That said, there are several difficulty levels, a spell practice mode for drilling individual attacks, and a new challenge mode with unlimited lives, so you can work your way up instead of hitting a wall.
Can you play it solo?
Yes, it is a singleplayer game through and through. A full run takes roughly half an hour, which makes it easy to fit in attempt after attempt. The included Classic version is also singleplayer.
Do you need to know Touhou to enjoy it?
No. The story stands on its own: a shrine maiden and a magician investigate a mysterious mist. Knowing the characters adds flavour, but the game teaches you who everyone is as you fight them, one boss and one barrage at a time.
What is different from the 2002 original?
The New Classic edition adds high-resolution graphics, rearranged music, a visible hitbox, a boss indicator, easier item collection, and the unlimited lives challenge mode. The bullet patterns themselves stay true to the original.
