RUNNING TRAIN | 走ル列車! Drive gently, stop perfectly

Run real timetables on two handcrafted Japanese lines, driving yourself or watching the countryside roll past from the passenger seat.

Is RUNNING TRAIN | 走ル列車! worth it?

RUNNING TRAIN | 走ル列車! is worth it if…

  • you want to unwind with a route, some weather and no pressure
  • you like driving games where the challenge is a smooth stop, not survival
  • you enjoy Japanese railways, cab ride videos or a bit of trainspotting
  • you would rather watch the scenery than operate, sometimes
  • you want to paint your own liveries and run them on a real timetable

Driving the line, one station at a time

You pick a diagram from over 40 of them, local and express runs across morning, afternoon and night, and take the train out. Speed limits and signals count down in metres ahead of you, and tips nudge you when it is time to brake. Stop smoothly and the score climbs; lurch your passengers around and it drops. Four train types handle differently, and one of them uses an old-fashioned automatic air brake that rewards reading the pressure gauge. If that sounds like homework, the other three are friendlier. Safety systems like vigilance and automatic train stop keep you honest, and hard mode, no-UI or no-speedometer runs are there when you want the game to stop helping.

A world worth looking at from every angle

The routes run over 40km through seaside towns and countryside, and the detail does not stop at the trackside. Weather and season are yours to set: one press swaps sakura spring for snowy winter, and rain or snow makes the wheels slip and the brakes bite later, so a pretty choice becomes a driving one. There is a photo mode for shots from bridges and distant rice fields, and an auto-drive mode that lets you ride as a passenger or trainspotter while the AI handles the controls. It runs smoothly on modest hardware, too.

What should you know before starting?

Can you play it without speaking Japanese?

Yes. The menus and signage lean on symbols, numbers and simple English, and players who read no Japanese at all report the game is fully playable. The routes and trains are fictional, so nothing depends on knowing real Japanese railway rules, though a little familiarity with signals and speed signs helps.

Do you need a special train controller?

No. A normal controller or keyboard works fine, and the controls are deliberately simple. If you do own a master controller, the game picks it up as soon as it is plugged in, no setup needed.

Can you just ride and look at the scenery?

Yes. Auto-drive mode hands the controls to the AI, and you can watch from the cab, sit in the passenger seats or set up a photo somewhere along the line and wait for your train to come through. Plenty of people play it that way, as a moving window onto the Japanese countryside.

How long is a run?

Diagrams vary from short hops to full-line runs that take the better part of an hour. Note that a run is played in one sitting: there is no mid-route save yet, so pick a diagram that fits the time you have.
