Is Rage Wars worth it?
Rage Wars is worth it if…
- you miss the era of rage comics and flash games and want a quick, silly trip back
- you like short, fast arcade shooters you can play in bursts without learning much
- you enjoy games that are funny on purpose and rough around the edges on accident

A story mode that knows exactly what it is
The campaign runs 30 levels, stitched together with cut-scenes that tell a dramatic story in the least dramatic way possible. Levels ask you to survive a set time or kill a set number of enemies while attackers pour in from both sides of the screen: some run, some jump, some fly, some hide in bushes. The whole thing is over in a few hours, which is honest of it. This is a joke told at full speed, and the punchline is the plot itself.
Potatoes, weapons and the rage button
Enemies drop potatoes, and potatoes buy guns: start with a pistol, work up through shotguns and an AK to a flamethrower, a chainsaw and a laser. Weapon crates also fall from the sky, and shooting one by accident means picking up whatever lands, so firing carelessly can cost you your favourite gun. When things go wrong, there is the rage button: your face contorts further, you become invincible and your damage triples. The meter is short, so deciding when to spend it is the closest thing this game has to strategy. Spend it too early and the next wave will remind you.
What should you know before playing?
Is it hard to control?
No. You move left and right, jump with the space bar, aim with the mouse and hold the button to fire. The rage ability sits on one key. The controls are about as simple as a shooter gets, which suits a game that moves this fast.
What is the game's humour actually like?
It is the humour of early 2010s rage comics: troll faces, Y U NO, FUUUUU and trolling moments, delivered with a straight face. The enemies are the memes themselves, and the game treats its ridiculous story with total seriousness, which is where most of the jokes land.
Does it look and sound good?
It looks like a rage comic come to life, with the familiar scribbled faces and simple backdrops, and the hero's expression shifts as he rages. The music is simple and pleasant, and the enemies announce themselves with their own signature lines. It is retro in feel rather than polished, and that is the point.
