Counting, but the good kind
Each puzzle hands you a honeycomb of empty hexes and a few numbers along the edges. That is the whole rule, and it takes about a minute to learn: click a hex to drop a dot, click again to add another, and a completed line glows green to tell you the sums work.
The pleasure is in the deduction. A line that needs exactly 7 from two hexes can only be 4 and 3, and suddenly half the board is decided. If you want the game to trust you instead of checking your math, a harder mode drops the green confirmation and leaves the counting entirely to you.
Six worlds, six new tricks
The 90 levels are spread across six worlds, and each one adds a mechanic the others do not have. Locked hexes that hold a fixed number of dots. Connected tiles that mirror whatever you place in one to all of its twins. Colored hexes that pour their dots into a shared pool. Equals signs and greater-than clues that pin values against each other.
Nothing is explained in text; the game has no words at all, menus included. Instead, each new idea gets a gentle intro level that shows you what it does, and you take it from there. After the main worlds, bonus levels unlock with the trickiest boards in the game, and a built-in level editor means there are more puzzles waiting once the handcrafted ones run out.
How long does it take to finish?
How long does Hexologic take to finish?
The 90 main levels plus the bonus stages take most people a handful of hours, and the pace is yours to set since nothing rushes you. Every level can also be replayed in the harder mode, where the game stops confirming your sums, which roughly doubles the puzzle count if you want it. A level editor and extra community puzzles stretch things further.
Is it difficult?
It starts gently on purpose: the early levels teach the rules and each new mechanic arrives with a soft introduction. The real bite is saved for the later levels and the bonus stages, where the boards combine several tricks at once. If that is still not enough, the harder mode removes the green highlight that confirms a finished line, so every sum is on you.
Can you play it with kids or family?
Yes, and it is a natural fit. The only skill involved is adding numbers up to 9, there is no text anywhere in the game, and a wrong guess carries no penalty. It plays fine with just a mouse, so sharing a couch and taking turns on a level works without any setup.
