Freeways Draw Your Own Interchanges

You are a traffic engineer, and your tools are a steady hand and a blank map. Draw freeway interchanges freehand, like sketching a picture, then let traffic flow through and see if it holds up. Keep the cars moving, keep the concrete budget sane, and connect a whole world together across 160 levels. Simple to pick up, surprisingly hard to do well.

Is Freeways worth it?

Freeways is worth it if…

  • you like puzzles where the solution is yours, not the one the level designer drew
  • you enjoy calm, low-pressure games in short sessions
  • you find real highway interchanges weirdly fascinating
  • you want a game that runs on anything, even a very old laptop

Drawing roads like a picture

There are no road pieces to snap together. You draw the road itself, freehand, from entrance to exit, and the curve of your hand becomes the curve of the highway. Want a road to climb over another? Raise it onto a bridge. Then run the traffic simulation and watch cars pour through your interchange: if they flow, you score well on both concrete used and traffic speed, and if they jam, you go back to the drawing board. Design for clean efficiency, or draw the spaghetti junction of your dreams and see whether it survives contact with actual drivers. One thing to know: there is no undo, so a slip of the hand means clearing the level and starting over. Levels are short, so it stings less than it sounds.

Can you replay levels?

Can you replay levels?

Yes. Most levels have many ways to connect the roads, so a second attempt can be a completely different interchange. You can go back to earlier maps and redraw them, chasing a better score on concrete used or traffic flow. Just note the game does not keep your old designs for you, so if you want to compare attempts, you will be remembering or screenshotting them yourself.

Is it hard to learn?

Not at first. The idea takes a minute: draw roads between the entrances and exits, stack bridges where roads cross, keep traffic moving. The depth comes later, when six busy roads meet in one spot and you have to juggle heights, curves and a limited concrete budget all at once. Early levels ease you in; the later ones earn the phrase "significant brain usage".

What does it look like?

Minimalist and clean: simple shapes, few colors, nothing on screen that does not need to be there. The look is closer to a tidy diagram than a city simulator, which suits the game well, since the interchange itself is the star. It also means it runs on just about any computer.

Can you play it solo?

Yes, it is a singleplayer game through and through, and there is no story to follow either. It is just you, the map, and the question of how to get all these cars where they need to go. That makes it a good fit for quiet evenings or a puzzle break between other games.
